EtG Alcohol Testing

Ethanol is also called alcohol, ethyl alcohol or drinking alcohol. It is the main type of alcohol found in alcoholic drinks which are produced by the fermentation of sugars using yeast. EtG is a direct metabolite of ethanol. As such, it can be found in urine 80 hours after alcohol ingestion. The presence of EtG in hair can be used to detect the presence of alcohol ingested recently even if the ethanol is no longer measurable. EtG testing is very dependable because EtG can only be detected if ethanol was ingested. It is not released as a result of fermentation within the body.

Alcohol abstinence is monitored using EtG testing for child custody cases, court-ordered case, probation programs, DWI cases, drug court cases and in situations where an individual is not allowed to consume alcohol at all. It comes in very handy for treatment programs and court-ordered programs because after alcohol ingestion, it can be detected for up to 80 hours and 90 days in urine and hair samples respectively.

For employer workplace alcohol testing, EtG testing will not be appropriate as it cannot prove current alcohol ingestion during working hours. In such cases, alcohol breath testing is recommended.
