What is Chlamydia?

Chlamydia infection is the most common bacterial sexually transmitted disease (STD) in the United States. There are about 3-4 million cases per year. Chlamydia is usually transmitted sexually through oral, anal, or vaginal sex. Infection could also be spread to a child being born to an infected mother. Engaging in oral sex is a way to obtain chlamydia infection in the mouth or throat. Patients who have been diagnosed with 1 STD are at an increased risk of being infected with other STDs. Most commonly, people diagnosed with Chlamydia are also infected with Gonorrhea. The #1 cause of infertility and pelvic inflammatory disease in women is Chlamydia.

Who is at risk?

Anyone who has had a new sexual partner or multiple sexual partners is at risk. Sex (intercourse or oral sex) without protection is another risk factor. Partners who have Chlamydia can reinfect each other if not treated properly. People at age 15-24 are found to be most at risk.

What are the signs and symptoms?

Approximately 50% of males and 80% of females have no symptoms at all. Most persons with Chlamydia in the mouth or throat do not have any symptoms. If Symptoms are experienced they may include some of the following:

Male Symptoms

  • Pain, burning, or difficulty with urination
  • Yellow discharge from the urethra
  • Pain and swelling of the scrotum
  • Rectal discharge (from anal sex)

Female Symptoms

  • Pain with intercourse
  • Vaginal discharge
  • Pain, burning, or difficulty with urination
  • Rectal discharge (from anal sex)

Testing

The US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has recommended that routine testing of sexually active young women is recommended to prevent complications of untreated infection (e.g., infertility). All patients who are concerned about exposure to STDs or have been diagnosed with other STDs should be tested for Chlamydia. Testing is done by a simple urine sample to check for Chlamydia in the genitourinary tract. To test for Chlamydia orally, it is done by a swab of the mouth and throat. Both the urine test and oropharynx swab test use NAATs testing which are the most sensitive tests for these specimens. Testing is done by a simple urine sample. For best accuracy, the person providing the sample should wait at least an hour before urinating for the test. Menstruation can decrease accuracy of the test. Results are usually available in 48-72 hours.

Treatment

Antibiotic treatment is extremely effective for Chlamydia. Reinfection is possible if sexual partners are not treated or from a new sexual partner. It is important that all sexual partners be tested and treated if needed. People diagnosed with Chlamydia should avoid sexual contact until at least 7 days after treatment is completed and all sexual partners have been tested and treated. Condoms should be utilized to prevent the risk of transmission of STDs (although abstinence is the only way to 100% protect yourself). Vaccinations that prevent certain STDs such as Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and HPV should be considered.

OMG, so e7 is one-of-a-kind in Vegas. My husband needed a TB Skin Test and I was able to book for the next hour. The staff actually answers the phone, right away. They are kind and nice. Upon arrival, at e7 Windmill location, the receptionist (who's name I do not have) was so kind, nice, and caring. She's a gem. During our brief wait for my husband's appointment, I witnessed the interaction between staff members and also, their clients. It's amazing that the entire, big e7 Team loves each other and what they do. You do not see this anywhere else. The team's interaction was magical. AND then how each staff member interacts with their patient, well... just unique. My husband had Alia, who definitely folded her Angel Wings in to fit in to the treatment room. What an amazing being. So patient, as my husband was on a walker and not so ambulatory. She explained all so clearly and easily. Truly, we have never experienced such CARE not just in Vegas, but anywhere. She also went above-and-beyond for us as to the next step. e7 scared me at first online, but now, they are my Go To and I have already recommended to many. God bless Alia and all. The Team truly LOVE what they do and it shows.
