Chikungunya is a disease caused by a virus and spread through infected mosquito bites. Outbreaks have been reported in Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Infections rarely start in the United States, but travelers to areas where chikungunya is found should take measures to prevent mosquito bites and receive the chikungunya vaccine.
The most common symptoms of chikungunya are fever and joint pain. Other symptoms can include headache, muscle pain, joint swelling, conjunctivitis and rash. Symptoms usually start 3 to 7 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. Most people feel better within a week, but some people have joint pain that lasts for months or even years. Newborns, adults 65 and older, and people with health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, or high blood pressure are more likely to become very sick. There is no medicine to treat chikungunya, so preventing infection is very important.
Chikungunya is not commonly found in the United States, but it does exist in many parts of the world, including Central and South America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia. In 2014 there were 2,799 cases of chikungunya among travelers returning to the United States, and 12 cases that were spread by local mosquitoes in Florida. Cases among travelers have been rising again, with 687 cases reported in 2025, the most since 2015. Locally spread cases were also reported in Florida and New York in 2025. Travelers who become infected abroad can carry the virus home with them.
Chikungunya vaccine is recommended for travelers who are 12 years of age and older and who meet the following criteria:
- Are traveling to an area with an active outbreak of chikungunya.
- Are planning to move to or stay at least six months in an area where chikungunya occurs.
- Individuals who are not sure of their travel plans or destination.
- Laboratory workers who work with or may be exposed to chikungunya virus.
