What is Hepatitis?
Hepatitis A is a viral infection usually transmitted usually by food and water, but rarely can be transmitted through blood. Hepatitis B is a viral infection transmitted through blood and bodily fluids. Both infections affect the liver and can cause yellowing of the skin, abdominal pain, fever, diarrhea, dark urine and death on occasion.
Nationwide epidemics of Hepatitis A virus occur in the United States approximately every 10 years. Rates of Hepatitis A infection has steadily been declining since 1995 which is attributed to high vaccination rates.
Rates of Hepatitis B infection in the United States has also been declining due to increased vaccination rates since the 1980s. CDC estimates 5,000-8,0000 individuals become chronically infected with Hepatitis B each year.
